As the leaves begin to turn and the air grows crisp, it’s time to transition your wardrobe into fall mode. This season, simplicity, versatility and structure are key. A capsule wardrobe is your perfect solution for fall – it’s a collection of timeless pieces that mix and match effortlessly, so you can create endless stylish outfits without overloading your closet. If the idea of a curated closet appeals to you, use this guide as a tool to help you get dressed. I have kept this capsule current and modern by incorporating current updated styles and fits, in colors that are popular for this Fall. It is important to keep your wardrobe up to date with current styles and seasonal colors.

For 2024, we’re focusing on cozy but very structured, chic layers, neutral tones with pops of color, and multifunctional accessories. Let’s dive into the must-haves for your fall capsule wardrobe, breaking down each item for you to build the ultimate collection!

THE TOPS – 2024 FALL CAPSULE WARDROBE

1. The Tank

Tanks are versatile pieces that serve your wardrobe year round. They stand alone in the summer heat and act as transitional layers in the Fall and layering pieces in the Winter. For the Fall, use these as your base and top with a jacket or sweater for the morning and evening chill. Then for those in-between temperatures you can shed them during the hottest part of the day. In the winter, they act as barriers for your sweaters and extra warmth.

Style Tip: Refresh these immediately when they start to appear too worn. Always have a black and a white version on hand.

2. Pullover Sweaters

Cozy sweaters are fall essentials. Look for neutral shades like cream, grey, or tan, which can be easily paired with jeans or trousers, and make use of the burgundy and reds of the season. You can even layer it over a dress for a relaxed yet polished look.

A Fisherman sweater is an interesting way to bring texture into the mix.

Style Tip: French-tuck your sweater into high-waisted pants for a more structured look that highlights your waistline.

3. Tees

T-Shirts are essential pieces within a wardrobe. They can be the cornerstone of multiple outfits, dressed up or down to suit any occasion. Wear them under a blazer for a chic work look, paired with jeans for a casual weekend outing, or matched with a skirt for a simple yet fashionable look.

Aim for at least 3-4 t-shirts in your wardrobe. Black and white are important to have on hand. A striped tee is great as well for pattern mixing and consider a pop of color or grey as well. Graphic Tees work well to give interest and edge to a capsule wardrobe.

4. Vests

Tailored Vests are very current and fashionable for Fall 2024. The structure pairs very well with the wider leg pants and looser skirts that are also currently trending. However, vests are classic items that you will always find pair well with menswear looks. The structure lends to a very streamlined look.

A classic twinset plays off of the Lady Cardigan look, but with an added layer with the matching shell.

7. Turtlenecks

A sleek turtleneck is the ultimate layering piece. Wear it under a blazer, slip dress, or even on its own with high-waisted trousers. Choose a black or neutral shade for maximum versatility.

Style Tip: For an edgy look, style the turtleneck with a leather jacket and statement belt.

THE BOTTOMS – 2024 FALL CAPSULE WARDROBE

1. Trousers – Grey, Black & Denim

Keeping lots of trouser options available for the cooler months is imperative and I suggest having several pairs of well fitted slacks on hand. Black and Grey will get you to work and home for lots of occasions. The denim trouser is also a great option as it can be dressed up for special occasions and worn with sneakers for errands.

2. Suede Skirt

Suede is one of 2024’s standout textures, especially in the very rich chocolate, light tans, burgundies and even green and navy blues that are available.

3. Skorts

Sports are easy year round pieces that you can layer with tights and stockings to create multiple looks. I really like a patterned tight to dress up a look. You can wear shorts with all kinds of heels and boots for different occasions. My favorite skorts are from Zara. Which, we all know is NOT linkable.

4. Silk Midi Skirts

Silk Mid Skirts have never really left the current wardrobe scene. They are elegant and chic and can be styled for dressy and casual occasions with the change of a shoe. You can find a variety of silk midi skirts via Nordstrom, Abercrombie, Anthropologie and Amazon.

5. Denim Jeans – Black, Gray, Medium Wash

Straight leg denim is definitely having its fun right now. Although it has always been available. While denim trends change ever so slightly year by year, the straight leg variety stands the test of time. You might still prefer your skinnies or even the wider leg denim, and those are still completely wearable. It’s all a matter of preference and finding the fit that works for you and then styling that in a modern way. Whatever the fit you choose, stick with clean, simple washes with no distressing or rips in shades of grey, black and mid-blue washes.

Style Tip: Cuff the hems and pair with ankle boots for a chic, relaxed vibe.

Leather Mini Skirts are taking over the skirt scene again this Fall and Winter. The beautiful rich texture of leather gives so much interest to an outfit. Leather instantly elevates everything. Try styling a single leather piece with a simple cotton tee shirt or white button down and you will look and feel so luxurious!!! The added plus is that there is an abundance of faux leather available, and it is great quality!!

7. Bubble Skirt

Bubble Skirts are another fun style to play with and add an element of interest to outfits. I love a black bubble skirt style with a white button down. Add some feathers for a little interest and a good pair of heeled sandals or knee high boots.

8. Midi Skirts

Flowy yet structured, the midi skirt is a must for fall 2024. Go for neutral or autumnal hues like burgundy or olive, and style it with chunky knits or sleek bodysuits. It’s a versatile piece that can take you from a casual brunch to the office with ease.

Style Tip: Pair with knee-high boots and a tucked-in sweater for an effortlessly elegant look.

9. Joggers

Joggers are easy to style and give a little more structure than a pair of leggings. These are easy go to’s for casual daytime and weekend looks.

10. Leggings

Leggings will always be the standard for athleisure looks. Casual and easy to wear, they are the go to pull on ready in a minute pieces. Simply change up how you wear them for a more modern and current look that will not make you look dated. I keep things fresh with oversized pieces, long schrunchy socks, and large “Dad” Sneakers or cozy Sherpa lined Ugg shoes/boots.

12. Track Pants

The classic side striped track pants of the 90s are back! And this time we are wearing them with sneakers and blazers, and with heels and camisoles!!! Style them casually or dressy for a very cool chic vibe. Go with your favorite color and throw them on instead of dress pants or jeans!!

THE JACKETS – 2024 FALL CAPSULE WARDROBE

1. Blazers

This year, Blazer’s are a little oversized and slightly longer in fit. It lends more of a masculine dress vibe to the look. Always go with a black blazer if you are starting to fill out your wardrobe or update your current style. From there my suggestion is that you begin rounding out your blazers with texture. Try an interesting tweed in shades of brown. This gives you the flexibility of having a black and a brown option to add to your outfits. Incorporate a leather option at some point, burgundy would be a great choice, or stick with black. This will allow for more texture and interest integration. After you have a black and brown option, a few textures (tweed and leather) you can start collecting colors – burgundy, green, mustard for the fall/winter and lighter colors for the spring/summer. Red is always a powerful choice, and one that I have on hand ready to wear, it’s my favorite!!!

2. Denim Jacket

Denim Jackets are slightly oversized as well. To be honest, I wear my fitted JCrew Denim Jacket all the time, but I do not put my arms into the sleeves. I just throw it over my shoulders. It gives a denim vibe without the overly structured look.

I also have a very oversized Gap denim jacket that I wear when I want a denim jacket look, for a casual vibe.

3. Leather Moto Jacket

A leather jacket instantly adds a touch of cool to any outfit. This year, we’re loving oversized or moto-style leather jackets in classic black or deep brown. It’s a great transitional piece for those early fall days when the weather can be unpredictable.

Style Tip: Throw it over a floral dress for a fun contrast between edgy and feminine.

4. Bomber Jacket

The Bomber Jacket is a great option for when you want something a little different. There are satin, leather, suede and twill options that lend themselves to a structured, but still soft silhouette. Play with texture here and stick with a neutral black, tan, brown, olive color. You will get the most wear that way.

5. Lady Cardigans

The Lady Cardigan offers a modern style button up sweater. Longer cardigans can make things look dated and frumpy. The Lady Cardigan hits at the waist, is very structured, usually tweed or textured and woven. Use it as your light jacket, layer with button ups, silk camisoles, or drape it over your shoulders.

6. Field Jacket

Field Jackets are the updated version of an Anorak jacket. This new utility jacket is available in the classic olive color, as well as tans and browns. They can also be lined with sherpa wool.

7. Trench Coat

Nothing says fall like a well-fitted trench coat. Opt for a neutral color like camel or beige for versatility. This coat works for casual outings with jeans and boots or dressed up with a skirt and heels. It’s your go-to outerwear to stay warm and chic as temperatures drop.

Style Tip: Belt it at the waist for a defined silhouette, or leave it open for a more laid-back vibe.

8. Leopard Jacket

The jacket of the Fall 2024. Throw a leopard jacket, coat, trench or even lady cardigan on over anything to instantly elevate. Staying current and modern is as easy as swapping something out for a piece of leopard.

THE DRESSES – 2024 FALL CAPSULE WARDROBE

1. Denim Dress

The versatility of the Denim Dress is endless. This is a piece that you can wear to work, to school, on errands, to parties, to church and for evening dinners. Change the accessories and shoes up and you can take the dress literally anywhere.

2. Sweater Dress

Swapping out your cotton dresses for sweater dresses in the winter is a must. The knit fabric gives interesting texture and warmth. Layer with colored tights and a coat for evening outs.

3. Red Dress

I would suggest always having a red dress on hand. Red looks good on everyone!!! I promise, it is a universal color and will make you instantly festive, instantly interesting.

4. Leopard Dress

Again the go to print for Fall 2024 is leopard. Having a dress that reflects that will keep you looking current.

5. Black Dress

The LBD is synonymous with dressing up. The LBD of the moment is a silky slinky black camisole dress that hits about mid-leg length. If you are a shorty like me (under 5’2″) I like to have a little slit. This breaks up the bottom of the dress and lets your leg peak out, which is important when midi skirts and dresses swallow you up. You can find lots of dresses with slits, or you can take it and have it altered.

THE ACCESSORIES – 2024 FALL CAPSULE WARDROBE

1. Belts

Belts are great for defining your waist and adding a touch of sophistication and elegance to outfits. I would suggest having at least a black, a brown and a burgundy belt on hand for your outfitting needs. Once you have thin leather belts on hand, consider some bulkier larger ones that tie or drape for some interest.

2. Tights

Tights and patterned hosiery is very popular right now. Try matching your shoes to a pair of colored tights for a very modern look, or a pair of patterned black tights with a pair of black boots. Red on red or burgundy on burgundy.

3. Hats

The beret has made a very strong comeback this Fall and Winter. Remember to put it on pulled back at your eyebrow line. Then angle the right side over your right ear and pull forward slightly.

4. Earrings

Chunky gold hoops or gold pearl buttons are the current go to earrings.

5. Handbags

Keep things sleek and classic with leather handbags in black, chocolate and tan tones. Inject some color with red, burgundy and green or blue. Make sure you have appropriate day and night handbags in your wardrobe. More on that here.

THE SHOES – 2024 FALL CAPSULE WARDROBE

1. Flats

Mary Janes and Ballet flats are all the rage right now. I like to keep things neutral with a nude pair that will elongate legs.

2. Heels

Always have a go to nude pump style heel. This will take you anywhere all the time!!

3. Burgundy strappy pumps will work very well paired with matching tights and brown tones.
4. Gold slide on mules will get you to dressed up in an instant.

3. Loafers

Loafers are very much in fashion this season, and they vary from sleek and classic to chunky in styles.

A classic mule is a great year round go to shoe.

5. Boston Clogs

For those athleisure, errand and travel looks.
